Although the action of the novel mainly takes place in other places, the image of the prison-fortress constantly hovers over the narrative. It reminds the reader that injustice can be confined within stone walls, but truth will always find a way out. But perhaps the closest contact with Bastille among readers occurs through works dedicated to mysterious prisoners.
