Reasons for Reading

The present lecture course is aimed at undergraduate and other students studying experimental nuclear physics and engineering. These lectures may be used as a guide explaining a number of elements of quantum physics, primarily the relation between nonrelativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics. Such a guide, in the author’s opinion, can eliminate the existing gap in the available scientific literature.

In the introduction to the well-known book “Physics of the Nucleus” (translated into Russian in 1964) Prof. M. A. Preston emphasized the importance of preparing students for independent navigation through scientific periodicals.

Keeping this in mind, the author provides numerous references to publications both in Russian and in English, in order to provoke students’ interest to the material and involve them in active reading. Practically the same approach he tested in supervising students’ course works and dissertations / projects, while working at the Physics Department of St. Petersburg State University and the Department of Physics and Mathematics of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

Similar principles are applied to the present online lecture course that can be considered as an introduction to modern model analysis of experimental data in the sphere of nuclear reactions, including proton scattering from nuclei.

Lecture Couse I has been later expanded and complemented by Lecture Course II, Part A, which is also available online on this site. Lecture Course II will be continued in future.

Opening Paragraph

Summary

The lectures consider nonrelativistic and relativistic formalism in inelastic proton scattering; interaction of nucleons in free space; application of nucleon interaction formalism to the process of their scattering from nuclei; the method of coupled channels; relations between the formalism of the Schrödinger and Dirac equations; transformation of the relativistic equation into the “Schrödinger equivalent”; comparison of analytical approaches in the relativistic conception of inelastic proton scattering; the deformation model in the distorted-wave method based on relativistic and nonrelativistic formalisms; the optical model of the nucleus; application of various elements of the above discussed formalism to the analysis of experimental data on inelastic proton scattering.

With all the approaches, special attention is paid to the spin-orbit interaction and its origin,

The author’s lecture courses available online seem to be overloaded with demonstration materials. Therefore, some of these materials, especially those relating to various experiments, are presented here separately in the form of an ATLAS that can be considered as a supplement to the lectures.

The Chapter consists of two sections. The first section (in Russian) is devoted to theoretical studies of proton spin observables in reactions. The second section (in English) deals with experimental measurements and potential combinations of polarization transfer coefficients. Different types of DW…

The present lectures are aimed at providing a clear explanation of modern experiments related to the spin of the particle. The lectures consider the Dirac approach to the transformation of the existing wave equation (nonstandard Schrödinger equation). This approach consists in the requirement that t…

A review is given of our present knowledge of different parametrization of experimental results in inelastic scattering process with polarized proton beams. Spin observables in inelastic scattering of polarized protons for a set of lightweight nuclei are studied at intermediate energies in the regio…

This Supplement is devoted to the study of observables in inelastic scattering and the density dependence of the effective interaction used in this analysis. Thus, special combinations of observables for inelastic scattering are presented. To describe them the DWBA program is used that exactly treat…
